Professional of the Year Award Honoree
Shelly Cepeda, Ph. D., LCSW, School Social Worker
Shelly was born and raised in Long Beach, NY and attended Long Beach Public Schools. Her parents were born in Guatemala, Central America. Shelly is a first generation Latina American who enjoys being involved in both her home and school district community.
Shelly is a licensed clinical social worker. After graduating Long Beach High School in 1990, Shelly attended Binghamton University where she obtained a Bachelor degree in Liberal Arts. Shelly holds a Master degree and a Doctorate in Social Work from Adelphi University. Shelly has worked as a Bilingual School Social Worker for the Long Beach Public Schools since 1997.
In 2003, Shelly presented “Helping Children in the Acculturation/Assimilation Process” at the New York State School Social Workers Association. She has also has served as a Field Liaison and Field Instructor supervising social work interns. Having worked for The Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Shelly interned at substance abuse and mental health clinics throughout Nassau County. In 2007, she was a recipient of the ‘Big Sister Award’ from Project Challenge, Long Beach, New York. She is also is a Past Honoree of the 2013 ‘Sandy’s Super Stars’ from Long Beach Latino Civic Association, and had the honor to serve as a Judge for the 2013 Spanish Spelling Bee Contest for the Long Beach Public Schools.
Today as a licensed school social worker Shelly works with families, staff and the community. Her goal is to create an environment that openly encourages parents to be active and engaged in their children’s education. Shelly coordinates and supervises many school wide programs, and also serves on school wide committees in an effort to foster and maintain a positive school climate.
Shelly and her husband Carlos live in Merrick with their two loving children Albert and Rose. She is actively involved in her home community where she serves as a parent board member for the Merrick Before & After School Program and is a member on several PTA committees.
